Who Is at Highest Risk?
Before we get to the foods, it’s important to understand who should be especially vigilant:
-
People with gastrointestinal issues – Celiac disease, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and IBS impair absorption
-
Type 2 diabetics – High blood sugar increases urinary excretion of magnesium
-
Those with alcohol dependence – Alcohol alters magnesium absorption and excretion
-
Older adults – Absorption decreases with age, while excretion increases
-
People taking certain medications – Proton pump inhibitors (for acid reflux), diuretics, and some antibiotics
-
Athletes – Significant magnesium is lost through sweat
-
Pregnant and breastfeeding women – Requirements increase significantly
